Ada and Software Engineering Library

Version 2, November 2000

The Ada and Software Engineering Library is one of many hypertext documents donated to the

Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac by Richard Conn, Lead of Space Day in Pulaski County.

Richard, who is also the editor of these documents, created them under contract to the US

Department of Defense in collaboration with many corporations, universities, and government

agencies.  This library represents an investment of over $220,000,000 in software and dcouments

produced by these organizations, and the software and software and systems engineering

approaches contained in this library are used on many major programs, including, but not limited

to, the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle, the fighter jets of the US Air Force and many

other countries, the Air Traffic Control System of the United States and over 60 other countries, and

our Hurricane Hunters.

The ASE2 Library Version 2 is used by organizations in over 192 countries.

NASA Space Shuttle Mission STS-118

and the

NASA Education Initiative

Space Day in Pulaski County is involved in the NASA Education Initiative, particularly Space Shuttle

Mission STS-118.  Many video tutorials, educator guides, and supporting documentation and website

links are available in the STS-118 Educator Resource Kit, and this supporting material has been

provided to our four teams of educators and students in Pulaski County:

  1. Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation - about 100 students lead by Barbara Behnke
  2. West Central School Corporation - about 75 students lead by Bobby Quimpo
  3. Boy Scouts - about 15 scouts lead by Judge Mike Shurn
  4. First Christian Church - about 90 students lead by Pastor Glen Meyers

Over 10,000,000 basil seeds were flown into orbit on STS-118 in August, and packages of these seeds

will be distributed to over 1,000 participating schools and community organizations around the country,

and the four groups mentioned above are a part of this.  These groups will receive the seeds from NASA

in late October and take part in NASA's design challenge (see the STS-118 web page).

Two classes were presented to students on earth by Teacher Astronaut Barbara Morgan, an historic

first for NASA's Teacher Astronaut Corps.  Videos of these classes are included on Version 2 of the

STS-118 Educator Resource Kit data DVD+R.  Additionally, several NASA tutorials made during the

STS-118 mission, including narrated videos of the shuttle launch and landing (from multiple viewpoints,

including that of the shuttle pilot), are included on this DVD+R.

Space Day in Pulaski County will be involved in a second Space Shuttle mission, currently planned for

later this fall, in which the official Space Day Signatures in Space program will conclude with a shuttle

mission in which the signatures of over 2,000 students, teachers, and staff from Eastern Pulaski and

West Central will fly on a shuttle mission.  The school systems will receive a plaque and a photo of

the shuttle crew after the mission is complete.

Plant Growth Chambers

Four Plant Growth Chambers were purchased and distributed to the following local organizations:

  • Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation
  • West Central School Corporation
  • Boy Scouts
  • First Christian Church

These chambers are used in the NASA Space Shuttle Mission STS-118 educational initiative,
particularly the Design Challenge.

NASA Space Day at Disney World

"Reach for your dreams ... the sky is no limit," states the new plaque outside Disney's Mission Space ride in EPCOT

Center at Walt Disney World.  The plaque dedication was a part of Disney World's "NASA Space Day" celebration on

September 10, 2007, in which Teacher Astronaut Barbara Morgan and the six other astronauts who flew aboard the

Space Shuttle Endeavor during the STS-118 mission were honored for their hard work in the space program.

 What is World Space Week?

2007 Theme: 50 Years in Space

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to the betterment of

the human condition.  It is the largest world-wide space event in history.  The United Nations General Assembly declared

in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from 4-10 October. These events commemorate two events:

  1. October 4, 1957 - the lanuch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1
  2. October 10, 1967 - the signing of the Treaty on the Principles of Governing the Activities of States in the

Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

World Space Week is under the guidance of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the

UN Office for Outer Space Affairs.

World Space Week is open to all govenment agencies, industry, non-profit organizations, schools, teachers, and

individuals who are interested in organizing events in celebration of the world space programs and their accomplishments.

Activities are coordinated by the United Nations in collaboration with the World Space Week Association.  Groups from

50 countries are currently involved.

The benefits of World Space Week include, but are not limited to:

  • Educating people around the world about the benefits they receive from the various space programs
  • Encouraging greater use of space-oriented technology for sustainable economic development
  • Demonstrating public support for space programs
  • Exciting children about learning and their future
  • Promoting institutions around the world that are involved in space programs
  • Fostering international coorporation in space outreach and education

This event is ideal for teachers to foster student interest in science and math.  Click here for an activity guide for teachers.

To encourage participation, the World Space Week Association gives various awards each year.
