Student Signatures in Space A centerpiece of the Space Day program is the Student Signatures in Space (S3) project, which gives elementary and middle school students the opportunity to send their personal signatures into space on a Space Shuttle mission. Lockheed Martin Corporation and NASA have partnered to present the S3 program. Since 1997, more than 3 million students across North America and in 33 other countries have participated in this program. Each year, students at about 500 selected schools sign posters during Space Day events and activities. The signed posters are then collected, digitally photographed, and launched on an upcoming NASA Space Shuttle mission. After the flight returns, schools and groups will receive their original posters for display, along with a flight certificate and photograph of the Space Shuttle crew that carried their signatures. The program is sponsored jointly by NASA and Lockheed Martin Corporation, and there is no cost for schools to participate. Both Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation and West Central School Corporation have been selected for participation during the 2006-2007 school year. The Space Shuttle mission carrying these signatures is to take place in the fall of 2007. See the Events page for specific information on the flight date.
